Index (a lunar crater)

With the exciting success of the Perseverance landing and the upcoming April Space X mission, I thought this would be a good time to share some fun information about the lunar crater named Index.

I came by the information by accident when I was poking around Wikipedia looking up something else. What a happy surprise.

In 1971 the Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott and James Irwin landed the lunar module Falcon in the Hadley-Apennine region where Index is located.

It is in a line of four craters, the other names being Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

The IAU (the International Astronomical Union) which “serves as the internationally recognized authority for assigning designations to celestial bodies and surface features on them” approved the name in 1973.
